Data deletion

Ahlan is in pre-launch testing. It runs on a test environment with test data and does not yet serve the customers of real businesses. This page describes how the service is designed to handle data when it goes live, and says so where a feature is not finished yet.

If you messaged a business on WhatsApp

The business you messaged controls your data, so ask it first. You can also email us using the address at the end of this page, and we will work with the business on your request.

If you use Ahlan as a business or as staff

Email us from the address on your account and say whether you want a staff account removed, or the whole business and its data deleted. Only an owner of the business can ask for the whole business to be deleted.

What to put in the email

  • The subject line: data deletion request.
  • The name of the business involved.
  • The WhatsApp number you used, or the email of the staff account.
  • Please do not include health details or copies of your messages.

We may ask you to confirm that the number or account is yours before acting on the request.

How requests are handled

The self-service export and erasure tool is not built yet, so a person handles each request manually. We do not yet promise a fixed response time for individual requests. We will tell you when the deletion is done, or why part of it cannot be done.

When a whole business leaves, it has a 30-day export window and its data is then deleted within 30 days.

What can remain after deletion

  • Backups: deleted data stays in backups until they expire, within 35 days at most.
  • Opt-out: a keyed, non-readable entry may remain so that an opt-out continues to be honoured.
  • Audit and access logs: kept for 25 months. They hold the names of changed fields, not message content.
  • Records the law or the business's own duties require it to keep, such as invoices or a record the business must retain.
  • Meta's copies: WhatsApp is Meta's service, and we cannot delete what Meta or your own phone holds.
